The effort known as "Operation Awareness" and the "Crime Detection Program" recruits desk clerks to be on the lookout for Hispanic guests from Florida who pay in cash, law enforcement sources told the Star-Ledger of Newark for Wednesday's editions.

First Assistant Attorney General John Zoubek confirmed that his office is reviewing the anti-drug program in the motels and other State Police interdiction efforts. The review is part of a wideranging assessment of State Police training, procedures and practices. It was prompted by allegations that troopers unfairly target black and Hispanic motorists along the Turnpike. The newspaper's sources said clerks in selected hotels and motels near the Turnpike are given 40 to 50 minutes of training on how to recognize possible drug traffickers who are staying at their inns. The clerks contact police when they become suspicious about a particular customer.

State Police spokesman John Hagerty said the desk-clerk program is run by the Narcotics Enforcement Bureau. It is a joint effort with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. 911 tape played in murder trial MAYS LANDING (AP) A woman calmly described her exboyfriend to a 911 operator moments before he fired a series of shotgun blasts that killed her.
